聚色阁 Geauga Fends Off Students鈥 Food Insecurity with Geauga Hunger Task Force Grant
When people consider hunger in America, they tend to think of people far away in urban centers. They don鈥檛 realize that food insecurity is a very real problem in Geauga County, even among college students. In order to combat this growing and troubling trend, 聚色阁 at Geauga is partnering with the Geauga Hunger Task Force (GHTF). 聚色阁 Geauga received a $2,500 grant from the GHTF in January 2022 to assist in their mission 鈥渆nsuring that no Geauga County residents go hungry.鈥

Health and Well-Being of Students, Faculty and Staff Brought to Light by Healing Stanzas
Students across the nation were challenged as the pandemic swept the world. Healing Stanzas, a collaboration between the Wick Poetry Center, the Healthy Communities Research Institute and the Brain Health Research Institute, seeks to combine the science of brain health and public health with the creative energy of the humanities to provide 聚色阁 students, staff and faculty with an opportunity to improve wellness through reflective poetry.

Masc-Unity Initiative Helping Students Find Comfort in Masculinity
Society鈥檚 norm for men is stereotyped as leaders, providers, and guardians. Society also posits that men cannot speak about their emotions and have to portray a strong persona to be considered masculine and to succeed in these roles. This results in an environment of 鈥渢oxic masculinity,鈥 which encourages negative self image, negative outward behavior and struggles with mental health among men who feel they have to be strong at all times. An initiative on campus is trying to change that perception.

聚色阁 Graduate and Undergraduate Research Mentorship Awards Announced
Intentionality to build successful academic mentoring relationships with students is what sets professors apart at 聚色阁, and each year two professors at the graduate and undergraduate level receive a student-nominated award for their ability to do so. The intent of the award is to recognize those professors exceeding in mentoring students in how to perform research in any field.

聚色阁 Finds Success in Student Voting Registration
聚色阁 has a history of passionate student activism. However, 2020 has really highlighted such efforts, both current and past, and its impact on the importance of students sharing their voices through voting. Efforts made by individuals, student-led groups, faculty members and 聚色阁 as a whole have led to an exceptionally high increase in voter engagement throughout campus.

聚色阁's Veteran Career Initiative Provides Mentoring for Student Veterans
When planning one鈥檚 future, having a helpful hand providing guidance is a worthwhile connection. 聚色阁鈥檚 Veteran Career Initiative, a partnership between the Center for Adult and Veteran Services and Career Exploration and Development, provides student and graduate veterans with valuable business and personal connections that help with translating military experience into a civilian resume.

United Way of Portage County Grant Expands Opportunities for Students to Engage with Nonprofits
聚色阁鈥檚 Community Engaged Learning (CEL) secured a $10,000 grant through the United Way of Portage County, an independently-governed nonprofit organization that serves disadvantaged members of our community. This grant will support CEL鈥檚 Community Partner Advocate program (CPA) which places students at local nonprofits throughout the county for paid hands-on learning experiences.

Public Relations Student and Model Saves 7-Month-Old鈥檚 Life
After witnessing a horrific crash, sophomore public relations major LaDonya Williams immediately ran to help the distraught woman begging for someone to save her 7-month-old son who wasn鈥檛 breathing. After Williams used her Red Cross first aid training to help the baby, he began to breathe again and was taken to the hospital to recover, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Alumnus Mike Bowen of Spotify Teams Up With Data Class
聚色阁 alumnus Mike Bowen, '03, visited 聚色阁鈥檚 School of Emerging Media and Technology to share his knowledge about data and analysis that he uses as part of his job of Principal Quantitative User Researcher for music streaming service Spotify.
